How to Remove a Sew-On Patch Without Damaging the Fabric

Patches are fun. You put one on your footy jacket. You put one on your school bag. It looks great.

But one day, you may want to take the patch off. Maybe it is old. Maybe you want a new one. Maybe you changed footy clubs in Melbourne and need a new badge.

If you pull the patch off fast, it can make holes in your jacket. So let's do it the right way. Nice and slow. Nice and easy.

Quick answer - turn the jacket inside out, cut each little thread one at a time, then pull the patch off gently. Do not rip it. Rip it and you get holes.

Why Patches Are Hard to Take Off

A sew-on patch is stuck on with lots of little threads. Tiny stitches, one after another, all the way around.

If you pull hard, all those stitches pull at once. That can tear your fabric.

So we go slow. One stitch at a time. That is called patch removal.

What You Need

  1. Small scissors or a seam ripper
  2. Tweezers
  3. A flat table
  4. A good light so you can see

Steps to Take a Patch Off

  1. Turn your jacket inside out
  2. Find the little threads on the back of the patch
  3. Cut one thread
  4. Pull it out with your tweezers
  5. Cut the next thread
  6. Pull that one out too
  7. Keep going all the way around the patch
  8. Turn your jacket back the right way
  9. Lift the patch off - it should come off easy now
  10. Brush off any leftover bits of thread

That's it. All done. No holes. Now you have a clean space for a new patch.

What If There Is a Mark Left?

Sometimes you can still see a little outline where the patch was. That is okay. A wash can make it fade. Or you can put a new patch right over the top.

How to Fix a Peeling Iron-On Patch

Iron-on patches are different. They do not have stitches. They have glue. Sometimes the corner starts to peel up.

You do not always need to take it off. You can fix it.

  1. Put a thin cloth over the patch, like a tea towel
  2. Turn your iron to medium-hot, no steam
  3. Press down on the peeling part for 20 to 30 seconds
  4. Let it cool down all the way before you touch it
  5. Still peeling? Put a tiny bit of fabric glue under the corner and press it flat

If it keeps peeling and peeling, it might be time for a new patch. A sewn-on patch stays put for longer.
